Make Marking Student Writing Easy with These Correction Codes

Hi fellow teachers! Today I want to share a big time-saver with you – my writing correction codes list!

What Are Correction Codes?

Correction codes are short labels that show what kind of grammar mistake a student has made. They help students learn from their errors without you having to write long explanations each time.

How I Use These Codes

My system is really simple:
1. I read through the student’s text
2. When I find a mistake, I check my list to find the right code
3. I underline the mistake in red pen
4. I write the correct version above it
5. I add the error code in green pen next to the correction

Why This Works So Well

Think about those huge piles of homework and tests we all have to mark! With these codes, I can:

  • Mark papers much faster
  • Give clear feedback
  • Help students find patterns in their mistakes
  • Save my hand from writing the same comments over and over

Common Errors You’ll Find

While this isn’t a complete list of all grammar errors, I’ve found these are the most common ones my students make:

  1. SP for spelling mistakes
  2. CAP for when they forget to use capital letters
  3. S/P for singular/plural mix-ups
  4. VT for verb tense problems
  5. WW for using the wrong word

How Students Benefit

My students like this system because:

  1. They can see exactly what they did wrong
  2. They learn the names of grammar rules
  3. They can spot patterns in their mistakes
  4. They feel less overwhelmed than with papers covered in red marks
