As we approach the special four-day celebration from 5th to 8th May 2025, towns and villages across Britain are getting ready to mark this VE Day 80th anniversary.
This important date in British history reminds us of when the Second World War fighting ended in Europe on 8th May 1945.

What is VE Day?
VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) marks the day when Nazi Germany surrendered, bringing peace to Europe after nearly six years of terrible fighting. On this day 80 years ago, people poured into the streets, waved Union Jack flags, and joined together in happy celebrations as news spread that the war in Europe was finally over.
Royal Participation
This year’s celebrations will be extra special with King Charles III taking part in the festivities. His Majesty will attend the national service of remembrance at Westminster Abbey and will later appear on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony to watch a military fly-past. The King’s participation shows how important this anniversary is to our national memory and heritage.

Nationwide Celebrations
All across England, people are planning:
- Traditional street parties with long tables of food
- 1940s themed dances and sing-alongs
- Union Jack bunting hanging across streets
- Winston Churchill speech readings
- Veterans’ parades and medal ceremonies
- Second World War vehicle displays
Why We Remember
These VE Day celebrations help us teach children about wartime history and remember the brave men and women who fought for freedom. The 80th anniversary is especially important as fewer veterans from this time are still with us to share their stories.
