Have you ever found a story so good that you just had to share it with your class? That is exactly how I felt when I discovered the true story of Punch the monkey.

Punch is a tiny Japanese macaque who was born on 26 July 2025 at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan. Shortly after he was born, his mother abandoned him. The zookeepers stepped in straight away, feeding him by hand and keeping him warm and safe. Because baby macaques need something to cling to, the keepers gave him a big fluffy stuffed orangutan from IKEA. Punch loved it. He carried it everywhere, dragged it across the ground, and hugged it tight whenever things got hard.

In early 2026, videos of Punch and his beloved toy went viral around the world. Millions of people cheered him on. And slowly, little by little, Punch found his place in the monkey troop.

It is the kind of story that stops you in your tracks. And it turns out, it is also a brilliant teaching tool.

Real stories connect with students in a way that made-up texts simply cannot. When children know that Punch is a real monkey living in a real zoo right now, they lean in. They care about what happens next. That emotional connection is exactly what drives reading engagement, especially for reluctant readers.

Punch’s story also naturally opens up conversations about resilience, empathy, and belonging. These are not just ELA skills. They are life skills. And when you can teach both at the same time, that is a real win.
