How to Use the Crossword Generator
What it does The Crossword Generator builds a printable crossword from your own clues and answers. It automatically works out how the words connect, numbers each clue, and produces a clean puzzle page and a filled-in answer key.
Step-by-step guide
- Open the Crossword Generator in your browser by clicking the above image.
- Type a title in the Puzzle Title box.
- For each clue, type the clue text in the Clue box and the answer (one word, no spaces) in the Answer box.
- Click + Add Clue to add more rows.
- Click Generate Crossword. The grid builds automatically.
- If a word could not connect to the grid, the generator tells you which one. Click Regenerate to try a different layout, or swap that word for one that shares more letters with the others.
Downloading and printing
- Download Both Pages – saves a Word file with the puzzle on page 1 and the answer key on page 2. Press Ctrl+A in Word to select everything and change the font or size.
- Print Both Pages – prints both pages directly from your browser.
You can change the fonts and add clipart to the word file.
Tips
- 6–9 clues works great for younger learners. 10 -15 clues fills the grid nicely for older students.
- Pick words that share common letters – for example ELEPHANT and BANANA both contain A, so they can cross.
- Avoid very short words under 3 letters as they are hard to place.
- Use the Regenerate button to try different layouts – the grid shuffles each time.
Why Crossword Puzzles Are Great for Learning
