Frida Kahlo’s Life
Frida Kahlo, born on July 6, 1907, in Mexico, became a celebrated artist known for her captivating self-portraits and vibrant paintings. Her life was full of both beauty and struggle. In 1925, a devastating bus accident left her with severe injuries, yet during her long recovery she began to paint. Art became her way to express both her physical and emotional pain.
Frida’s work often reflected her personal life, including her marriage to the famous muralist Diego Rivera. Some of her most renowned pieces include The Two Fridas, Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, and The Broken Column. These paintings continue to inspire people all over the world.
This lesson gives students the chance to explore Frida Kahlo’s inspiring story while engaging their creativity. After reading a short biography and answering comprehension questions, students can complete a hands-on craft that beautifully captures her legacy.

- Cross-Curricular Links: Pair the craft with a short writing task, such as a diary entry written from Frida’s perspective, or a comparison between two of her paintings.
- Classroom Display: Use the finished crafts to create a vibrant bulletin board for Women’s History Month or Hispanic Heritage Month.
- Extension Idea: Encourage students to research another female or Hispanic artist and design their own “glasses” craft inspired by that artist’s work.
