Zohran Mamdani was born on 18 October 1991 in Kampala, Uganda. He moved to New York City as a child and grew up caring about his community. Before becoming mayor, Mamdani worked as a housing counsellor, where he helped families stay in their homes. He later won a seat in the New York State Assembly and represented Queens. In this role, he worked on laws and ideas to help local people. In 2025, he ran for mayor of New York City and won the election. He began his role as mayor on 1 January 2026. He will focus on making the city easier to live in by supporting rent help and public services.
